Trip to Iceland 2009

Ŝingvellir - The site of Iceland's first parliament, Gullfoss - A spectacular waterfalls and Haukadalur - A geothermally active area which contains a number of active geysirs. On my drive up to Ŝingvellir I passed by Lake Pingvallavatn the largest lake in Iceland. Even on a cloudy overcast day, the lake and the surrounding craggy volcanic hills and lava fields made for a very serene and majestic landscape vista.
One of my first impressions when riding out from from Reykjavik, was the lack of traffic on the roadway, once you get about 30 - 40 kms outside of Reykjavik, there are very few other vehicles on the road. There are only about 320,000 people in the whole of Iceland, with about 205,000 living in Reykavik and its surrounding surburbs. .
My destination for this first day was to be the southern coastal town of Vik. After spending most of the morning riding through Ŝingvellir and taking in the sights at Gullfoss and Geysir I headed south to the coast and follow Hwy #1 eastward to Vik. If there is anything that can be said about the weather in Iceland is that it is variable. Wait 5 minutes and the weather will change. Vik was a very interesting little town, known for its black volcanic sand beaches and the set of prominent sea stacks offshore.
