Trip to Iceland 2009

The southern part of Iceland is covered by a major glacier called Vatnajokull under which lays a number of active volcanoes . Most of the southern landscape of Iceland is coverd by large Sandors or glacier outwash plains which covers several thousand sq km of this southern part of Iceland. One favorite tourist stop along this route is the Jökulsárlón Iceberg Lagoon. Jökulsárlón is a fascinating spectacle of icebergs floating about in a lagoon. The icebergs break off the face of a glacier some miles up the valley and float down the river to the lagoon and eventualy out into the Atlantic ocean. From Vik I headed east along the Ring-Road to Hofn and into the Eastfjords and the eastern part of Iceland. I stopped overnight in the coastal fishing village of Neskaupstadur. To get to Neskaupstadur you follow a gravel road from Eskifjordur up into the mountains and through one of the highest mountain passes in the country. To reach the town of Neskaupstadur you need to pass through a single lane tunnel about .6 km long through the mountain, Neskaupstadur is on the the other side of the tunnel. Neskaupstadur is a community of 1400 inhabitants, but for the live of me I did not think I came across more than 5 or 6 people during my stay there. Everyone must of been out whale hunting or fishing.
