Trip to Iceland 2009

From Neskaupstadur I continued north and westward over a series of mountain ranges. Once you cross over the mountains, the landscape begins to dramatically change. Instead of the rugged mountains, the land is transformed into a featureless landscape composed of low lying hills and desolate windswept barrens. The main attraction in north eastern Iceland has to be the Myvatn basin and Krafla. The Myvatn basin sits right on top of the mid-Atlantic ridge and is one of the most geologically active areas in Iceland. There are a number of active hot springs in the area with steam vents and boiling mud pots. From Myvatn I continued westward along Hwy #1 to the town of Akureyri. Akureyri is the second largest city in Iceland outside of Reykjavik and is an important seaport and fishing centre. The city is situated on a major fjord surrounded on all sides by towering snow capped mountains, it is a favorite tourist destination for foreigners as well as for the local Icelanders. From Akureyri I followed the route north into the Trollaskagi peninsula to Dalvik and on to Siglufjörður a quaint little coastal village on the northern most point in Iceland. With the surrounding snow capped mountain peaks the town has an almost alpine feeling to it. The area is a favorite locale for hikers and rock climbers. From Siglufjörður I continued along route # 76 down the coast to Sauroarkrokur where I stopped for the night.
