Trip to Iceland 2009
From Sauroarkroku I headed north into the Westfjords and wondered along the rugged and tortuous coastline of this sparsely populated part of Iceland. By day's end I had crossed the interior of the Westfjords and arrived at Borgarnes which would serve as my home base for the next few days as I explored the Snaefellsnes region of western Iceland. This part of Iceland is notorious for bad weather during any time of the year. The peninsula is out there alone jutting into the face of the north Atlantic and catches the blunt of any foul weather that comes its way. The Snaefellsnes is dominated by lava fields and strange rock formations.
At the western end of the Snaefellsnes peninsula is Snaefellsjokull, better known as the location that Jules Verne used in his novel. "Journey to the Centre of the Earth". The craggy rocky cliffs along the northern shores of the region is populated by bird colonies and picturesque fishing villages. The last couple of days of my trip were spent in the capital of Reykjavik. Reykjavik is a modern city, a mix of old colorfully painted wooden houses and new modern buildings. The downtown area has an active social scene with numerous restaruants and bars. As I now look back over the last few weeks that I have spent exploring this Nordic Island, all I can say is " What a magical and mystical place this island of Iceland is".
